A Special Day to Honor My Nanny — The Heart Behind Loving Light Home Care

Some days hold a little extra meaning.
Today is one of those days for me.
It’s my Nanny’s birthday 🥳 — a day that would have marked her 96th year. Although she’s no longer with us, her presence still shines brightly in my heart and in the work we do every day at Loving Light Home Care. She wasn’t just my grandmother — she was my safe place, my encourager, and the heart of so much love in my life.
From Memories to Mission: Honoring Her Legacy
I miss so many things about her — from her signature permed hair that always had just the right bounce, to her bright red-orange Avon lipstick that she wore with such pride. She had this radiant style that made her stand out, even in the smallest ways. I can still picture her applying her lipstick every morning as part of her routine, and how that little act of care for herself made her feel like the most beautiful woman in the room.
Our trips to Kmart were a favorite memory, too. I'd push her around in a cart, and we'd laugh at the little things we found in the aisles. But most of all, I miss how she had this incredible ability to make everyone laugh — even on the toughest days. She had a way of brightening any room just by being in it.
And let’s not forget the smell of her biscuits and gravy in the morning — a breakfast that brought us all together. The breakfast table was NEVER empty when Nanny was around. Whether it was family, friends, or neighbors, if you came through the door, you were welcomed with a plate full of love, and there was always room for one more.
Of course, I can’t forget her love for Judge Judy. If it was on TV, she was watching it — and absolutely no one was allowed to change the channel! “I’m just resting my eyes,” she’d say, with the most convincing tone, even if she’d already been sitting there for hours. It didn’t matter how much time had passed, that was her show, and no one could interrupt it. It was one of those small, funny quirks that made her, well, her.
Growing up, I had the incredible opportunity to not only witness her care for others but to experience firsthand what true, selfless care looks like. She was funny, patient, kind, and always full of light. I saw how she made everyone around her feel seen, loved, and valued — a love that wasn’t bound by words but by actions.
She taught me that care isn’t just about what you do for someone — it’s about how you make them feel while you do it.
♥ Seen.
♥ Loved.
♥ Valued.
♥ Never forgotten.
That’s the kind of care she gave so naturally... and that’s the kind of care Loving Light Home Care was created to offer.
Her Legacy Lives On
Every time we step into a client’s home…
Every time we offer a listening ear or a gentle hand…
Every time we serve with patience and kindness…
I’m honoring her.
Loving Light Home Care exists because of the love I received first. The heart behind our mission isn’t just business — it’s deeply personal.
Today, I smile knowing Nanny’s legacy continues — in the homes we visit, in the lives we touch, and in the families we serve.
She taught me what it looks like to love people well — and it’s the greatest privilege to pass that on every single day.
More than Care
At Loving Light Home Care, we believe our elders bring an irreplaceable light to the world. They hold stories, wisdom, and life experiences that shape us all. Their journeys teach us the true meaning of resilience, patience, and unconditional love. When we care for seniors, we’re not just providing a service — we’re honoring their lives, their history, and the invaluable lessons they offer us every day. We’re reminded that age is not a barrier but a treasure, and we are so fortunate to serve those who’ve paved the way for us.
So, today — hug your grandparents, your parents, your loved ones a little tighter. The impact they have on our lives is immeasurable, and the love they share with us is priceless.
To every family who has trusted us with your loved one — thank you. You're part of this story, too.
With love,
Kayla Douglas
